Pioneering technologies, advancing the cause of care, and applying a radically unconventional approach to addressing the healthcare needs in our communities. These are just a few of the advancements that have earned us awards and accreditations.
National Recognition
US News & World Report ranks Baptist Health System High-Performing in more areas than any other health system in San Antonio.
Baptist Hospitals were deemed high-performing in five adult specialties including:
• Cancer
• Gastroenterology
• Geriatrics
• Neurology/Neurosurgery
• Orthopedics
Cardiac
• The Society of Chest Pain Centers has granted the designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center to each of the five hospitals in the Baptist Health System. Baptist Medical Center, North Central Baptist Hospital, Northeast Baptist Hospital, Mission Trail Baptist Hospital and St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital received full accreditation status from the Accreditation Review Committee on November 3, 2005 (the first in San Antonio to receive it), and were re-accredited in 2008 and again in 2011.
• The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has designated all five of our hospitals as Medicare Value-Based Care Centers, the only hospitals in Texas to receive that designation.
• The American Heart Association has awarded the Get with the Guidelines Bronze Award for Cardiac Care to each of our five hospitals.
• Awarded the Silver Plus Performance Award for stroke from The American Heart Association
Neurosciences
• Each of the five Baptist Health System hospitals was named as a Certified Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission in 2010, the first in San Antonio to earn that achievement.
• The five Baptist Health System hospitals earned the first Target: Stroke Honor Roll in San Antonio from the American Heart Association in 2010 for exceeding standards of swift treatment of stroke.
• The American Heart Association has awarded the Get with the Guidelines Bronze Award for Stroke Care to each of our five hospitals.
• Baptist Health System is the only health system in South Texas to earn Stroke Specialty Program certification from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The CARF accreditation is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate excellence, accountability and conformance to internationally accepted standards that promote excellent outcomes and patient satisfaction. Baptist is the only facility in San Antonio to achieve CARF Accreditation for Stroke Specialty Program.
• The Baptist Brain and Stroke Network was selected in 2009 as a San Antonio Business Journal "Healthcare Hero" in the "Healthcare Innovator" category.
• The five hospital Baptist Health System, achieved a Gold Seal of Approval™ and Stroke Center Accreditation from The Joint Commission for all five facilities, making it the first hospital system in San Antonio to achieve this distinction.
Orthopedics
• The Joint Club teams at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Northeast Baptist Hospital received Gold Seals of Approval™ for knee joint replacement and for hip joint replacement.
• Designated as a Joint Commission Center of Excellence for knee and hip joint replacement
Cancer
• The Comprehensive Cancer Program of the Baptist Health System is accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Air Medical Transport
• San Antonio AirLIFE is among an elite group of emergency transport services in the U.S. to earn re-accreditation from the Commission of Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS). This prestigious accreditation represents the highest standards possible for transport services. AirLIFE, owned jointly by the Baptist Health System and University Health System, is one of only about 100 transport programs in the nation to meet these standards.
School of Health Professions
• The Baptist Health System School of Health Professions is approved and regulated in Texas by the Texas Workforce Commission, Career Schools and Colleges Section.
• Institutional Accreditation: Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
• Programmatic Accreditation: Department of Medical Imaging Technology Radiologic Technology Program, Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology
• Department of Professional Nursing Professional Nursing Program: National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (Candidacy Status)
• Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
• Department of Surgical Technology Surgical Technology Program: Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
• Department of Vocational Nursing Vocational Nursing Program: Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
• Baptist Health Systems Continuing Medical Education Department received full Accreditation with Commendation in 2010 from its accrediting agency. Receiving this status means that we met all accreditation criteria without any requests for improvement as well as met an additional six criteria which are required to achieve Commendation. This accreditation decision also gives us a six-year accreditation rather than four years. Only a handful of Texas CME providers have achieved this status.
Miscellaneous
• Baptist M&S Imaging Centers and Baptist Health System imaging departments are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
• The Diabetes Self Management Course of Baptist Health System is Recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
• Baptist Health System laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
• The inpatient Rehabilitation Centers at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Baptist Medical Center are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
• Baptist Health System is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
• Northeast Baptist Hospital has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
• Baptist Health System was recognized in 2010 as the Alamo region's Employer of the Year by the Texas Workforce Commission.
• The Ecumenical Center for Religion in Health, in sponsorship with the University Texas San Antonio College of Business awarded Baptist Health System with the 2011 Ethics in Business Award.
• In 2011, The San Antonio Business Journal recognized BHS as the “#1 Best Place to Work in San Antonio”.
• North Central Baptist Hospital has been designated as a 2010 Texas Ten Step Facility by the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association. This annual designation is awarded to birthing facilities that provide optimal care to improve breastfeeding outcomes.
• The Texas Workforce Commission presented Baptist Health System with the 2010 Employer Award of Excellence.
• In 2009, The San Antonio Express Newspaper recognized the Baptist School of Health Professions & Southeast Baptist Hospital as one of the “Top Workplaces” in San Antonio.
• Baptist Health System received the San Antonio Express News Readers’ Choice award for hospitals in 2011.
